Since 2004, the CWMDA has provided scholarship funds to wood products processing programs across the country. In BC, we provide two awards for second year students in the UBC Wood Products Processing Program at the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing. Edmonton’s Northern Alberta Institute of Technology receives the CWMDA grant for their carpentry program. In Ontario, the Woodworking Centre of Ontario at Conestoga College continues to receive our support, as does l’École Nationale du Meuble et de l’Ébénisterie, from Victoriaville, Québec. Finally, in New Brunswick, we support the Woodworking Centre of Excellence. Our aim is to support the students with a tangible recognition for their hard work. With members across the country, who make their living off the wood products manufacturing industry, it is important for us to work with our customers to bring more young people into the wood industry for the rewarding careers that are offered.
CWMDA awards two scholarship prizes at University of British Columbia.
As part of a scholarship program that was started by the CWMDA in 2004, two students in the Bachelor of Science in Wood Products program at UBC were awarded $300 each in recognition of their excellence in the 2013-14 academic year. The second year students were David Brandson of Abbotsford, BC and Evelyn Yi Gao of Vancouver. According to the Associate Director of Annual Awards at UBC, the continuing program of CWMDA awards “not only provide much-appreciated academic recognition and financial support to our students, they also help the university recruit and retain outstanding scholars.” This awards program, which has given scholarship money to 21 students since its inception, has made a difference in bringing more outstanding students to the UBC programs, leading to careers in the advanced wood products processing industry.
